:. Obesity

I look at obesity as an issue that I find to be sad but fixable. I feel that being obese is harder than being fit. I have never had a problem with weight because I played sports all my life and work out on a daily basis. Some people might tell you, well kids these days are lazy because their parents do not influence them to go out and be active, but I on the other hand played sports because of my own choosing. Everyone has the ability to make their own decisions no matter what their influences are. My actions never really pretained to what someone else was doing. Obesity can be prevented. Fast food chains appear pretty much in every town in America, but people have the choice to not be lazy and find better food than what is offered from those companies. Arkansas is ranked number eight on the list of the most obese states in America. There are fifty states, so I find this pretty sad that the state I was born and raised in is in the top ten most obese. Maybe if there were some restritions on fast food, and some law standards of how much physical activity a person needs to live a healthy live, then America would not be ranked number one out of the whole world having the most obese people.

  1. It saddens me, too, that Arkansas is the 8th most obese state in the U.S. (and that's according to an article in Business Week, by the way). I hope your generation can change things because I think your generation is a lot more active than mine.

The Business Week article I alluded to also suggests that our obesity problem is due to a number of factors--some we can choose to change, others we can't. For example, the extremely hot weather and high humidity make it difficult to exercise. And if you look at statistics, rural people are more likely to be overweight or obese which makes sense because they don't have access to air-conditioned gyms. Also, because they tend to be poorer, purchasing workout equipment isn't within their budget.

There's also something to be said for getting other people out of our way so we can be healthy. I think we need city ordinances that force fast food companies to make changes that will enable people to make healthier choices. For example, in New York City all restaurants must post the total fat, trans fat, and sat fat in all food. We could limit the hours fast food chains are able to stay open. There are a lot of things we could do to force ourselves to make better choices. But it takes a collective effort.

This could not be said any better or worded any better! America is possibly the biggest country, and I do not mean geographically. We do still have time to get America lean. People do have the choice to get off that stupid couch and become active in a gym or recreational league. Thank you for pointing out that America is increasing in size! I sometimes think that America is blinded by our own culture of being less active because things these days involve less physical activity.
